AAC Announces Inaugural Recipient of the Kelly Duffy Youth Leadership Award

At the Agricultural Adaptation Council’s (AAC) 30th Anniversary Celebration in Niagara Falls in September, we announced the launch of the Kelly Duffy Youth Leadership Award, honouring the legacy of longtime board member Kelly Duffy. The award recognizes emerging young leaders in Ontario’s agri-food sector who reflect Duffy’s values of integrity, leadership, global awareness, and an enduring commitment to agriculture.

Kelly Duffy was first elected to the AAC Board of Directors in 2010 as a Youth-at-Large representative and went on to serve a full ten-year term, including three years as Board Chair. Known for her positive outlook, collaborative leadership style, and deep passion for agriculture and the food and beverage industry, Kelly played a pivotal role in guiding the organization through change. Her influence continues to be felt across AAC and the broader agri-food sector.

Each year, the AAC board of directors will provide $5,000 to assist an aspiring agri-food leader in the development of skills and knowledge to benefit Ontario’s broader agri-food sector. The recipient will also be offered a one-year ex-officio term on the AAC Board of Directors, offering mentorship, professional development and the opportunity to observe and participate in board governance in service to Ontario's agri-food industry.

AAC member organizations nominated a youth who demonstrate leadership potential and a commitment to advancing their careers within the agri-food industry. Nominees are evaluated on their alignment with Kelly Duffy’s values, leadership, global awareness, and passion for agriculture.

We’re pleased to announce the inaugural award winner: Melissa Karpenko, nominated by the Ontario Federation of Agriculture and the Ontario Plowman’s Association.

Melissa farms near Grand Valley with her partner Josh, milking 400 dairy goats and raising broilers and hogs, while also working as a Registered Nurse. She’s a longtime 4-H ambassador, was awarded “Queen of the Furrow,” board member of the Peel-Dufferin Plowmen’s Association and the Dufferin Farm Tour board and is enrolled in the Advanced Agricultural Leadership Program.

Melissa’s passion for agriculture, community involvement, and leadership exemplify the spirit of the Kelly Duffy Youth Leadership Award.

Congratulations to Melissa Karpenko on being named the inaugural recipient of the Kelly Duffy Youth Leadership Award.
